FALL2014COMMUNIQU9FollowingathreadofcompassionCHRISTYSAWDONChristySawdonsgrandmothersewedmorethan3000quiltsfortheneedyandthatexamplechangedthecourseofherlifeatayoungage.ItwasherearliestmemoryofgrowingupandparticipatinginacultureofvoluntarismthatshescommittedtocontinueandwhichhasledhertoEgyptandZambia.ItshowIwasraisedshesaid.Itsanintrinsicmotivationaspiritualmotivation.KnowingthatIwasfortunateenoughtobebornintowhatIhaveonceIveseenaneedIhavetogotohelp.ShegrewupclosetoMSUinWilliamstonandattendedOlivetNazareneUniversitysouthofChicagograduatingin2013withadegreeinbiology.BythesummerafterherfreshmanyearshewastravelingtoCairotohelpaphysicianwhosepracticewasmovingamongthemorethan200000peoplelivingintrashcities.ItwasherrsttimeoutoftheUSA.Alotofthesepeoplewerehomelessbecauseofpersecutionshesaid.Myrolewastoworkwiththe14-year-oldtranslatorandtotakehistoriesandbloodpressuresbeforethedoctorsawthepatientsnearly50eachday.Atnightwedidsocialoutreach.IalsolivedandworkedwiththeBedouinsintheSaharaDeserttobuildwellsandhomes.Itreallyworkedoutshesaid.ImcomfortableinnewsituationsIddonemyresearchandIloveworkingwithpeopledifferentthanmyself.In2011shespenttheentiresummerinZambiadoingHIVandAIDSeducationamongthepeopleandtraininglocalhealthcareworkersundertheauspicesofNazareneCompassionateMinistries.WorkingfromhomebasesinLusakaandChomatheytraveledtoschoolsandchurchesspendingadayortwoateach.Theyprovidedbasicmedicalhomecaretaughtschoollessonsandspokeinchurches.TheZambianswerehighlyreceptiveofHIVeducationSawdonnoted.WealwaysgotextensiveparticipationinQandA.Therearealotofmisconceptionsandmyths.AfterZambiasheknewthatmedicinewasherfuture.ShecontactedKeithNelsona1988MSUCOMalumnusandhermiddleschoolsoccercoachshadowedhispracticeandlearnedabouttheosteopathicphilosophy.Itwasat.IdeallyIdliketoworkpart-tofull-timeinternationallyshesaid.MyheartissetonAfricaanycountrywhereIcouldhelp.MyspecialtyMaybeinternalmedicineorinfectiousdiseaseorimmunology.ThethreadofSawdonscultureofvoluntarismhasrunthroughallofherlife.InhighschoolshetutoredmathworkedblooddrivesconductedaSundaySchooldramaministrystuffedbackpacksfortheLansingCityRescueMissionandwasaninstructoratsoccercamp.DuringsummersshewasalifeguardandcounseloratCampBarakelandCran-HillRanchChristiancamps.AtcollegeshecommittedherselftobuildingarelationshipwithapersonwithdevelopmentaldisabilitiesintheBestBuddiesprogramrantheChicagoMarathonforTeamWorldVisionwasapeermentortofreshmanwomeneducatedstudentsandfacultyaboutbonemarrowdonationandservedaspartofateamtopackagedehydratedmealsforfamiliesinneedglobally.AftercollegeshetookayearoffandworkedwithelderlypersonsinanassistedlivinghomeinWilliamston.ShealsobeganworkatMcLarenGreaterLansingasanendoscopyvolunteerwhichshecontinuestothepresent.ForfunSawdonenjoysreadingtheoutdoorsandbackpackingandconsidersherselfabitofarunner.Shestraveledto47stateshikedtheGrandCanyonandstudiedtropicalecologyinEcuadorandtheGalapagosIslands.Fromhergrandmotherskneetofar-ungpointsontheplanetshescontinuingthethreadofvoluntarism.AsayoungsterSawdonstartedwalkingapathofcompasssionthatsalreadytakenhertotheneediestpeopleofEgyptandZambiashownhere.byPatGrauerSTUDENTS
