COMMUNIQUCOMMUNIQUVolume42Issue3Copyright2014MichiganStateUniversityCollegeoOsteopathicMedicinePublishedthreetimesperyearbytheOfceoPublicRelationsEastFeeHall965FeeRoadRoomA306EastLansingMI48824TocontactPublicRelations517-353-0616www.com.msu.eduMANAGINGEDITORLauraProbynEDITORPatGrauerDESIGNAnnmarieY.CookPHOTOGRAPHYAnnmarieY.CookJennierMillerLauraProbynCONTRIBUTINGWRITERSStephenM.SwetechD.O.KristopherThomasNicholoEDITORIALASSISTANCEBethCoureyKatieDonnellyBrittanyHarrisonHouseofDelegatesThetimestheyarea-changinDuringtheAmericanOsteopathicAssociationHouseofDelegatesgatheringthispastJulyinChicagotwohistoriceventstookplace.InonethedelegatesvotedtoconsiderunicationofthegraduatemedicaleducationprocesswithACGME.Inthesecondtheyapprovedaresolutiontosupportsame-sexmarriage.Onthesurfacetheseitemsmightappeartobetwoverydisparateresolutions.Inmyviewtheyareconnectedandrepresentanexcitingtimeinourprofessionshistory.IbelievethattheydemonstratealeadershipthoughtchangefromidealsheldbybabyboomerstothoseespousedbymembersofGenerationXandthemillennialschildrenofthe1970s1980sand1990s.Leadersareemergingfromamongthecropofyoungphysicianswhogrewupwithtechnologyglobalizationandfast-pacedsocialandeconomicchangesthataffectedallaspectsofourlivesandwork.Theyrepresentthefutureoftheprofession.IsawthisHouseofDelegatessessionasasentinelmomentinosteopathicmedicine.Thethoughtprocessoftheprofessionasawholeismovingaheadwiththenextgeneration.ItdoesntmeanthatthepreviousgenerationofwhichImamemberisbadorneedstobereplaceditjustmeansthatlikeanyhealthyentityosteopathicmedicineisevolvingandchangingtomeetmodernneeds.Whilethenewleadershaveavisionforthefuturetheoldguardseestheendoftheworldthattheyonceknewandviewthroughanostalgiclens.Thecominggenerationsdontsharearosyviewofthepastandareeagertoputtheirmarkontheworld.Thisishealthyandpositive.ThediscussionofunicationofthegraduatemedicaleducationprocesswillbeaseachangeforM.D.sandD.O.s.alike.ItwillmeanalotofthingstoalotofpeoplebothpositiveandnegativeandoneofthebiggestpositivesthatIseeisthattheunicationdiscussionwillhelpimprovepublicawarenessoftheprofession.Itwillbemorepowerfulthananyadvertisingcampaign.Ourstudentsareexcitedaboutthechancetovieforagreaternumberoffellowships.WhileitistruethatmoreopportunitieswillbeopentothemtheyllalsofacestiffcompetitionfromtheirM.D.counterpartsfortheseslotsaswellastheresidencyslotsthathavepreviouslybeenopentoonlyD.O.candidates.Programdirectorswillgravitatetowardselectingthebestcandidatesthatareavailablefromamuchlargerpool.IbelievethatcompetitionishealthyandIencourageourstudentstolookatitinthesamewayeventhoughthisadviceiscomingfromamemberoftheoldguard.ItstimefortheseyoungenergeticleaderstolooktowardwhatkindoffuturetheyenvisionforourprofessionandworkinapositiveandproactivewaywithourM.D.counterpartssothatwellallbenet.WilliamD.StrampelD.O.Dean
