The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumnus of the Year Award
Larry Nassar, D.O.
Beginning with no fewer than ten varsity letters in high school, Dr. Larry Nassar has been involved with sport and healthcare for athletes his entire adult life, serving since 1996 as the USA Gymnastics’ National Team Physician, and since 1986 as part of its medical staff. As such he is responsible to coordinate the teams’ medical care at every national and international competition, including the Olympics.
A 1993 graduate of MSUCOM, Dr. Nassar is an associate professor in MSU’s Division of Sports Medicine, Department of Radiology, and teaches sports medicine and physical exam skills to our osteopathic students. A strong advocate of osteopathic manipulative medicine, he employs these skills in his practice at the MSU Sports Medicine Clinic, as team physician for MSU’s women’s gymnastics and women’s crew, and as team physician for Gedderts’ Twistars Gymnastics Club and Holt High School.
A certified athletic trainer for 20 years, he has been appointed by the governor to the Michigan Board of Athletic Trainers, which oversees their practice and licensure in the state. He holds a patent on a brace for gymnasts with syndesmotic ankle sprains, and has received many awards, including six-time recognition as the United States Women’s Gymnastics Elite Coaches Association National Contributor of the Year.
For his stellar standard of care for both elite athletes and weekend warriors, for his service to Michigan State University and his community, and for exemplifying the best practices of the osteopathic profession, we at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine proudly honor Dr. Larry Nassar with the Alumnus of the Year Award.
