Clerkship Program Process and Resource List

The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, through the Office of Student Services, has developed a process for interacting with our students and hospitals during the Clerkship Program.  These changes are related to rotational logistics/operations and not curricular issues/content.

Office of Student Services

  • The Associate Dean/Student Services should be contacted if there is difficulty, doubt or confusion with the information and/or contacts presented below.  He will receive the information, respond if necessary, and send the information to the appropriate college resource.  The contact person is:

.

William M. Falls, Ph.D.
Associate Dean/Student Services
C103 East Fee Hall
PH: (517) 353-8799
Bill.Falls@hc.msu.edu

  • During a student’s clerkship training the Office of Student Services will handle the following:  enrollment (e.g. electives/selectives, schedule changes), degree requirements, and compliances (immunizations, HIPAA, blood borne pathogens, BCLS/ACLS, drug screens and criminal background checks).  This office will also receive all physician evaluations of student performance during the clinical rotations (required hospital-based rotations, PCAC, electives/selectives) as well as all incident reports.  The contact people are:

Rotational Logistics/Operations

  • It is the student’s responsibility to be sure that their University enrollment reflects their rotation schedules at all times and that they are on track with all degree requirements.

Ms. Horn and/or Ms. (Lake) Scott are to be contacted directly by students and hospitals before changes are made to a student schedule.

    Core Rotations:

    • Changes to required core hospital-based rotations are not allowed.

    Selective/Elective Rotations:

    • Application for initial scheduling of selective/elective rotations requires a 30 day advance notice.
    • A student cannot start a rotation without the proper paperwork, approvals and enrollment in place prior to the first day of the rotation.

    • Application for changes to scheduled selective/elective rotations must be received and approved 30 days prior to the start of a rotation.
    • Changes to scheduled selective/elective rotations are limited to 3 each semester.

    .

    • Selective/elective rotations should be scheduled in 4 week blocks to maximize the learning experience.

NOTE:  Application for a rotation will not be accepted after a rotation is completed.  Be advised this could result in approaching your graduation date with unfulfilled graduation requirements, i.e., not graduating on time (which could impact your postgraduate training start date).

Non-Base Hospitals may require an Affiliation Agreement which may take 6 to 10 weeks process time.

    PCAC:

    • Application for a choice/specialty rotation is not required.

    Evaluations:

    • All physician evaluations of student performance during clinical rotations must be complete and sent in a timely manner to the Office of Student Services by the hospital/clinic where the rotation was completed.  Evaluations which are not complete and/or not signed by the physician, hospital/clinic representative and student will not be accepted and returned to the hospital/clinic.  Evaluations will not be accepted if submitted by students.

    Compliancy:

    • During the Clerkship Program a student must be compliant the entire time with immunizations, HIPAA training, OSHA training in Universal Precautions (Bloodborne Pathogens), urine drug screen (subject to random drug screens), ACLS and BLS certification, criminal background check and fingerprinting (Class of 2014).  Failure to be compliant in any one of these requirements will result in the student being removed from a rotation until the student becomes compliant.
