Detroit Street Care

Detroit Street Care is a weekly student-run clinic that partners with the Neighborhood Services Organization Tumaini Center, a crisis support hub for those currently experiencing homelessness in downtown Detroit. Student-doctors are given the chance to actualize their classroom knowledge while attending to the health needs of actual patients.

Teams of College of Osteopathic Medicine students perform a complete history and physical exam, develop an assessment, construct a treatment plan and work with faculty preceptors to deliver appropriate care. During Street Runs, we head out of the clinic to find homeless individuals where they receive the same care, in addition to personal items, blankets and food.

Our work with the Neighborhood Services Organization enables a practical learning environment, bridging concepts presented during the pre-clerkship curriculum with real-world clinical exposure. Student-doctors also have the opportunity to expand their training, developing skills fundamental to the osteopathic physician-patient interaction, while listening to and providing care for those most in need.
