Clerkship Medical Education

The clinical clerkship curriculum is a program designed to educate and equip osteopathic physicians with skills necessary to enable them to enter a residency program in primary care or other medical or surgical specialty.

The Clinical Years

…or clerkship, encompasses both the third and fourth years at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The clerkship begins with preparatory course, Transitions II, with a goal of providing information and additional skills necessary to begin clerkship rotations.

Rotations

In the third year, students complete most of their core rotations at one of the College of Osteopathic Medicine affiliate base hospitals located within both the lower and upper peninsula of Michigan. Students immerse themselves into these communities while gathering hands-on experience in core/required rotations.

Throughout the clerkship, students can explore choice rotations, called elective rotations. These electives further define and impact a student’s area of interest and are completed both within and outside of the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Statewide Campus System healthcare hospitals. Students will spend elective time in both the surgical and non-surgical fields and have the ability to utilize elective time for international rotations and research.

Didactic Curriculum

The college has developed an innovative Core Clinical Concepts, or C3, program to further develop medical students clinical skills. The C3 curriculum includes clinical education through student online self-preparation and classroom instruction at the student’s base hospital. This didactic curriculum includes symptom-based topics that may relate to multiple specialties.
