Professional Development

Training and professional development helps the MSU community elevate the quality and effectiveness of our work and processes. We encourage ongoing learning for faculty and staff, that can ultimately also support future recognition in the promotion processes of the college.  Please see the following sections for additional guidance and resources available.

Guidelines for Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure in the College of Osteopathic Medicine

The College of Osteopathic Medicine values all of its faculty, and has established policies and procedures regarding promotion to recognize the many efforts of our faculty, be they in education, research, outreach, administration, clinical and/or other service activities, all of which are vital to the continued success of anyone impacted by the college.

In these pages and links, we have centralized a number of documents and examples to better assist faculty as they consider being recognized for their efforts. In addition, the college continuously seeks to provide opportunities for professional development and formalized mentoring for all of our faculty.

Mentoring Program

The College of Osteopathic Medicine has developed a voluntary mentoring program to support the professional development of junior faculty who have a primary appointment in the college. The goal of this program is to achieve high quality faculty that fulfill our mission and are successful in the reappointment, promotion and, as applicable, tenure processes at MSU.

Educational Assistance

Educational assistance benefits and eligibility are governed by an employee’s respective collective bargaining unit agreement. Non-union employees and Academic Specialists also have educational benefits available to them.

Educational assistance, or “ed assist,” benefits are available to help achieve educational and career development goals. There are two different aspects of educational assistance: non-credit courses and credit courses.

Educational Assistance may only be used as an individual benefit and is not available for mandatory or departmental required training, seminars, workshops, retreats and other use.
