Admissions Requirements

PLEASE NOTE:  We understand that due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many students will receive pass/fail grades. We assure future applicants that we will accept pass/fail coursework for any courses impacted by this situation. This holds both in cases where pass/fail is mandated by your institution and also in cases of individual choice.

To be considered for admission, the applicant must:

1. Meet all of the below admissions requirements and technical standards for admission.
2. Complete both the primary and secondary application.
3. Submit a minimum of three letters of evaluation.
4. Take the MCAT and release their score to AACOMAS.

Admission requirements are established by the faculty and are meant to ensure that every entering student has achieved a minimum level of education in key areas. Completion of requirements is vital to success in medical school.

Students must complete the following courses with no grade below a C or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale:

A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university or exemplary performance in a minimum of 90 semester hours of coursework including:

• Biology: 8 semester credit hours.
• Chemistry*: Total of 16 semester credit hours. Must include a minimum of 3 semester credit hours of biochemistry.
• English**: 6 semester credit hours.

*Any combination of lecture/lab chemistry/biochemistry courses may be used to fulfill the total credit hour requirement of 16 semester credit hours, but must include a minimum of 3 semester credit hours of biochemistry.

** Candidates who have successfully completed Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and received credit reported on their undergraduate transcript may apply those credits toward the English requirement or the chemistry requirement only. We do not accept AP credit toward the biology or biochemistry requirements.

Candidates may apply while coursework is in progress, but incoming students are required to complete all prerequisite credit hours before they begin classes in June.

We reserve the right to alter these requirements to correspond with curricular changes.

Recommended Courses

We strongly encourage applicants to complete additional courses in junior or senior level biological sciences. Courses such as anatomy, physiology, genetics and provide a strong foundation for success in medical school.

Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

The MCAT is required of all applicants who are not eligible for a waiver through the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program.  For the 2023-24 application cycle, any 2020 test date or later MCAT is acceptable with the following exception: We will not accept 2024 test dates (January or later) for the 2023-24 cycle.

Evaluation Letters

The evaluation section is complete and suitable for review when at least three letters of evaluation are received. Letters should be written on letterhead or business stationary. Letters must be dated and include the author's signature. Electronic signatures are acceptable.

The College recommends that at least one letter be written by an academic or medical professional. MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine does not require academic, committee, or advisor evaluations, nor do we require that an osteopathic physician complete an evaluation. Letters should be written by individuals who have no family relation to the applicant.

The Office of Admissions can only accept letters of evaluation submitted through the AACOMAS application letter service. We are unable to accept letters by email, mail or fax.

Technical Standards

The College of Osteopathic Medicine requires that all candidates for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree meet the following technical standards for admission for participation in its program.
