New updates to the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine mobile app, originally launched in 2017, have proven to be beneficial when it comes to keeping essential health and academic forms at students’ fingertips.

Created by the admissions and pre-college team, the app offers a student, applicant and pre-college portal, each containing essential information for students throughout their medical education.

Mollie Mfodwo, manager of pre-college programs, was a vital contributor in getting the app started.

“Students have found it very useful, especially the academic calendar feature and the COVID screen portal during the pandemic,” Mfodwo said. “Since the updates were launched, the app has allowed us to have real-time connections with our students along with providing timely updates at their fingertips.”

Information including enrollment and records, academic and career advising, wellness and counseling services, a weekly newsletter, student handbook and much more can be found in the student portal.

“The app makes accessing the screening forms really easy,” said Kylie Taphouse, a second-year student in the college. “It condenses the clutter of multiple links and allows me to view both the academic and events calendar.”

“The app is useful for connecting students to the wellness team and contacting our social media department,” added Courtney Merlo, a second-year student in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Students can also access the handbook if they have any questions.”

Browsing the applicant portion of the app, one can schedule an advising appointment, preview college and physician assistant program application requirements, plus retrieve information about the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s three sites including East Lansing, Macomb and Detroit Medical Center.

The pre-college portal offers information to high school students for programs including Future DOcs, OsteoCHAMPS, OsteoCHAMPS-UP and Osteopathic Medical Scholars.

Dr. John Taylor, director of wellness and counseling services, praised the development of the new app and the administrative team who contributed to making these resources easily accessible.

“It’s helpful for our college community to have this information so they can readily access the many resources and information out there,” Taylor said.” “If you haven’t looked at the app, now’s the time to download it.”
