SpartanPA faculty member joins Journal of Physician Assistant Education as feature editor

Back

Bruce Dobey, MHS, PA-C, assistant professor and assessment and evaluation coordinator at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Medicine, has recently been appointed as a technology and education feature editor for the Journal of Physician Assistant Education (JPAE).

As a feature editor, Dobey will be responsible for writing or soliciting two feature articles each year and working with authors to ensure that submitted articles align with the feature topic and are ready for publication.

“This appointment provides additional incentive to engage with MSU’s leading role in education innovation and extend the impact even further,” Dobey said. “I believe the PA Medicine program at MSUCOM is uniquely positioned to become a leader in PA education.”

In his two-year term, which began on Jan. 1, Dobey plans to engage with the recently established MSU Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation to “leverage the vast resources and expertise on our campus for the benefit of the PA Medicine program.”

About JPAE

JPAE is “dedicated to advancing physician assistant education by publishing ethically produced, scholarly manuscripts germane to PA educators and by providing a forum for the sharing of ideas and innovations that will enhance the education of PA students,” according to the journal’s website.

JPAE is analogous to other medical education journals in that it provides a publication space to contribute to general medical education discussions, while also allowing for the publication of scholarly activity specific to physician assistant education, Dobey said. “There is a significant amount of overlap in the scope of these journals and much of the content is broadly applicable to medical education in general.”

Lifting up the PA Medicine program

The PA Medicine program at MSUCOM offers a 27-month, 108-credit curriculum leading to the Master of Science in PA Medicine degree. SpartanPA students work with various health professionals and, in some cases, learn alongside SpartanDO students during both their didactic and clinical training experiences. This collaborative approach allows PA students to be introduced to the osteopathic medical tenets, providing a framework for a holistic approach to patient care in order to meet the needs of an ever-changing healthcare marketplace.

“The relationship with MSUCOM and the university as a whole provides an enormous field of opportunities for collaboration and innovation,” Dobey said. “My appointment to this JPAE role provides another avenue to disseminate the methods, innovations and ideas developed through these MSU partnerships.”

Looking forward

“My professional journey has benefited greatly from the work and mission of the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) and the JPAE,” Dobey said. “I hope to contribute to the continued advancement of this mission while creating new opportunities for collaboration and innovation in physician assistant education.”
